One of Egyptian queen Cleopatra's favourite gems, the green emerald is the birthstone for May.

Emeralds have always been associated with fertility, love and rebirth – certainly according to the ancient Egyptians - but modern interpretation links them to wisdom, growth and patience.

The finest emeralds are a vivid, deep shade of green and are more valuable. However, they are also very brittle. In fact, come across a flawless emerald and you could be sitting on a fortune.

Lab-created gemstones are not imitations. For example, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds have been manufactured in labs to possess identical chemical and physical characteristics to the naturally occurring variety.

Sterling silver consists of 92.5% silver the other alloy being copper. Copper is used as silver alone is too soft and malleable, the copper is used to create strength in the piece. Copper reacts to its surroundings and the atmosphere.

To help slow tarnishing wear sterling silver on clean skin frequently, the oils from your skin will 'clean' the piece with every wear. Always put your jewellery on last when getting ready and take it off first, don't exercise in your sterling silver or wear it in the pool.

Sterling silver is best stored in an airtight container preferably with an anti-tarnish strip.

To clean you can use dish soap or a small amount of silver cleaner.
